Most polychlorinated naphthalones (PCN) accumulate rapidly according to their hydrophobicity. The uptake and ellmination rate constants are comparable to those of chlorinated benzenes and biphenyls.For most PCN-congeners the resulting bioaccumulation factors show an increase with increasing hydrophobicity. For higher Kd,oct-values (>105) however, no further increase of Kc is observed (Kc. max. = 3.5.104).For the two hepta- and the octachloronaphthalenes no detectable concentrations are found in the fishes, although no restricted blo-availability could be expected. Based on these observations and on data obtained from the literature. a loss of membrane permeation is suggested for hydrophobic molecules with widths over 9.5 Å.In addition a membrane permeation model, as part of the accumulation process of hydrophobic chemicals. We investigated the accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in eggs of three insectivorous bird species, the great tit (Parus major), the Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and the Mediterranean gull (Larus melanocephalus), near the harbour of Antwerp (Belgium). Our results show that lapwing eggs had the highest median concentrations of PCBs (4358 ng/g lw) and PBDEs (109 ng/g lw). Mediterranean gulls feed during breeding on ground-dwelling invertebrates on agricultural fields, which is reflected in higher OCP concentrations in eggs (1235 ng/g lw). Apart from differences in accumulation, also interspecific differences in contaminant profiles were investigated. Significant differences among species were found in the profile of PCBs, PBDEs and OCPs. These differences could be attributed to differences in diet, behaviour and metabolic capacity. Interestingly, the OCP profile in lapwing eggs deviated extremely from the two other species. In both great tit and Mediterranean gull eggs p,p'-DDE was by far the most important compound, whereas in lapwing eggs hexachlorobenzene, oxychlordane, trans-nonachlor and even p,p'-DDT were relatively more abundant than p,p'-DDE. The high p,p'-DDT/p,p'-DDE ratio has previously been described in lapwings, which suggests that low p,p'-DDE accumulation in eggs might be inherent for this species.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the accumulation, tissue-specific distribution and possible debromination of BDE 209 in a terrestrial songbird species, the European starling, using silastic implants as a method of exposure. BDE 209 accumulated in the blood of the exposed starlings to a mean peak concentration of 16+/-4.1 ng/ml on day 10. After this peak, there was a decline to 3.3+/-0.4 ng/ml blood at the end of the exposure period of 76 days, which suggests elimination of BDE 209. In the exposed group, the muscle concentrations (461 ng/g lipid weight [lw], 430 ng/g lw) were about twofold those in liver (269 ng/g lw, 237 ng/g lw). In addition to BDE 209, other PBDE congeners, particularly octa- and nonaBDEs, were also present in the muscle and liver, suggesting bioformation from BDE 209. To our knowledge, these results are the first indications for the debromination of BDE 209 in birds.  相似文献

From February 29 until June 15 2008 gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) fluxes above a snow covered surface was measured in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard using a GEM flux gradient method. A clear seasonal pattern in the meteorological variables associated with the GEM flux was observed. For the first time in Ny-Ålesund a net deposition of GEM was recorded during polar night, despite the lack of Atmospheric Mercury Depletion Events (AMDE). 7500 ng m−2 GEM was emitted from the surface snow to the air during the entire study. The depositions of GEM and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were calculated to be 1500 and 1000 ng m−2, respectively, during the same time period. The GEM fluxes reported in this study were found to be comparable to GEM fluxes measured at other Arctic locations (i.e. Alert and Barrow), suggesting that GEM acts in a similar way throughout the Arctic. An assessment of the GEM flux gradient method used discovered a non-linear GEM concentration profile. The nonlinearity was explained by a non-stationary turbulence regime. The GEM flux calculated was not found to be representative for the entire surface boundary layer.  相似文献

Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) is a sampling technique for sampling rare and geographically clustered populations. Aiming to enhance the practicability of ACS while maintaining some of its major characteristics, an adaptive sample plot design is introduced in this study which facilitates field work compared to “standard” ACS. The plot design is based on a conditional plot expansion: a larger plot (by a pre-defined plot size factor) is installed at a sample point instead of the smaller initial plot if a pre-defined condition is fulfilled. This study provides insight to the statistical performance of the proposed adaptive plot design. A design-unbiased estimator is presented and used on six artificial and one real tree position maps to estimate density (number of objects per ha). The performance in terms of coefficient of variation is compared to the non-adaptive alternative without a conditional expansion of plot size. The adaptive plot design was superior in all cases but the improvement depends on (1) the structure of the sampled population, (2) the plot size factor and (3) the critical value (the minimum number of objects triggering an expansion). For some spatial arrangements the improvement is relatively small. The adaptive design may be particularly attractive for sampling in rare and compactly clustered populations with an appropriately chosen plot size factor.  相似文献

In recent years, resilience engineering has been given considerable attention among safety researchers and analysts. The area represents a new way of thinking about safety. Whereas conventional risk management approaches are based on hindsight knowledge, failure reporting and risk assessments calculating historical data-based probabilities, resilience engineering looks for ways to enhance the ability of organisations to be resilient in the sense that they recognise, adapt to and absorb variations, changes, disturbances, disruptions and surprises. The implications of this shift in thinking are many. We focus in this paper on the understanding of the risk concept and how risk can be assessed and treated. The traditional ways of looking at risk are not suitable for use in resilience engineering, but other risk perspectives exist. A main purpose of this paper is to draw attention to such perspectives, in particular one category of perspectives where probability is replaced by uncertainty in the definition of risk. We argue that the basic ideas of resilience engineering can be supported by such risk perspectives.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to investigate, whether the coastal grey dune vegetation at Anholt, Denmark, is limited by nitrogen or phosphorus. The island Anholt (22,37 km2) is situated in the centre of Kattegat A two factor fertilization experiment with nitrogen as NH4NO3 (N-addition) and phosphorus as KH2PO4 (P-addition) was carried out in the coastal grey dune vegetation of Anholt. The N-addition corresponded to 40 kg N ha?1 year?1 and the P-addition to 7 kg P ha?1 year?1 The experiment included N-, P-, N + P-addition and control. Lichens (genera: mainly Cladonia, Stereocaulon, Cetraria, Hypogymnia) and bryophytes (genera: Polytrichum, Racomitrium) cover most of the surface. Only two plant species, Corynephorus canescens and Empetrum nigrum, constitute nearly all vascular plant cover and biomass of this calcium poor coastal heath community. Corynephorus and Empetrum increased their cover significantly following N and N + P addition. No effect was observed by P addition alone. N limitation of this coastal heath vegetation remote from agricultural and industrial activities was evident. The effect on the plant species of the single application was short-lived. After two-three years of enhanced cover, the Corynephorus and Empetrum cover had returned to their level before the experiment. The lichen vegetation, however, changed more permanently, and after 12 years the subplots with N + P addition was dominated by rich growth of Cladina and Cetraria species. The results are discussed in relation to anthropogenic nitrogen deposition and conservation of this high priority ecosystem.  相似文献
